Goats at the farm! Find out how to get involved

We are pleased to announce that goats are coming to Oxford City Farm! The Farm has brought animals to Oxford City since it first started and we’re excited to expand the animals available to give the public and volunteers a greater understanding of where our food comes from and the importance of sustainable agriculture to our communities, even inside the city.

We will trial the addition of goats to the farm this year with the addition of two does in kid (pregnant female goats) and one whether (castrated male) from Norton and Yarrow Cheese. Norton and Yarrow has been building their herd to support the production of their cheeses and has kindly offered to support the Farm in helping the community learn and experience tending for goats.

Oxford City Farm has looked at many models around the country for city farms and charities to include goats and we are proceeding with a model based on the highly successful Bristol Street Goat programme. We are looking for volunteers to join our new goat programme to come and milk and care for the goats. There will be a membership fee of £70 per year for individuals or families to help offset the costs of feed and care for the animals. Member-volunteers will then sign up for milking shifts to come and milk the goats and can take home all the milk the goats produce during that shift.

This approach will still allow all of the community to enjoy interacting and watching the goats and their kids here on the farm of course! We’re excited for the addition of goats to the farm and thank Norton and Yarrow for loaning us the goats for this year.

If you would like to learn more about joining our goat programme as a member-volunteer, even if you have no experience, please fill out this form so we can learn a bit more about you and be in touch!
